Icy Mike shares his thoughts on beating taller opponents while rocking his favorite S5 All Rounder Gloves

As Mike explains in his S5 video, he already gets some extra reach from the gloves, but he goes beyond in this video to tell shorter guys how to take on lengthier training partners.

Mike first explains that being all the way in and all the way out doesn’t give you an edge in beating taller opponents, it just makes being beaten a slower process. He tells us that we need to be in the mid range in order to win, because if they can hit us, then we can hit them.

Distance management, positioning and footwork are the keys to success in beating taller opponents while sparring or fighting. Mike says that you need to make your opponent think that you are in his range through suggestion so that you can move and land your own shots. Essentially, you fake the move subtly so that they throw, but then move in as they bring their shot back. You thereby control the timing and distance.

Ultimately beating taller opponents is a range game. You want to bait them into feeling that they are in their range through suggested movement, but then get into your range through the ruse. You win fights by keeping opponents in the end of your shots, not by staying out of the pocket or being in their clinch range.

Icy Mike is rocking his limited edition S5 All Rounders. Check out his Revgear store to get these Hard2Hurt exclusive gloves and show your flair while beating taller opponents of your own. Like Mike says, the S5 are his favorite glove and he won’t wear anything else while sparring as they give him an unfair advantage over all comers, not just taller guys.
