Crazy Nutrition is a supplement brand owned by Wolfson Brands. They are a relatively new company, debuting their first product in 2021 with a whey protein supplement. Since then, they’ve developed a mass gainer, creatine, and the pre-workout supplement we will review.

According to Crazy Nutrition’s personnel, they don’t just throw random substances into supplements. They have a team of dietitians on staff who create these supplements based on elite expertise.

While this does not imply that the supplements are good, Crazy Nutrition have done their homework and created a pre-workout that is appropriately dosed and really effective.

Ingredients

This pre-workout supplement is distinguished from others because each ingredient is adequately dosed. Many pre-workout supplements underdose components only to say they’re in there or disguise doses under proprietary blends.

Let’s start the review by looking at the main efficacious ingredients individually. Here is the list of the most important ingredients:

Citrulline Malate 2:1 (7g)

For citrulline malate 2:1, the most effective dose is 6-8 g, with the upper end being better for acute performance enhancement and the lower end for chronic supplementation [1][2].

For example, taking 8 g of citrulline malate 60 minutes before exercise enhanced reps to failure, decreased muscle soreness for 24 to 48 hours, and improved maximal grip strength [1].

When 6 g is consumed over seven days, the time to exhaustion rises during moderate-intensity cycling [2]. Furthermore, muscle fatigue was reduced following exercise compared to placebo [3]. How does citrulline malate improve your endurance and possibly your pumps in the gym?

It is a vasodilator, also called a nitric oxide enhancer. You may recall the good old days of NO Explode pre-workout. They attempted to create a supplement that would produce the improvements in the abovementioned experiments.

However, they had one major weakness. Using L-arginine. L-arginine is converted to nitric oxide in the intestines. Unfortunately, nitric oxide is poorly absorbed in the gut, resulting in no dilatation of the blood arteries.

L-citrulline is converted to L-arginine in the kidneys, which bypasses the gut and increases nitric oxide. This leads to increased blood supply to the working muscles.

But why citrulline malate rather than L-citrulline? According to research, citrulline and malate may operate synergistically to increase ATP generation while decreasing lactic acid buildup, extending fatigue. As a result, Crazy Nutrition dosed it far higher than typical pre-workouts.

Beta-Alanine (2.5g)

Beta-alanine is another endurance supplement causing tingling and itching in the skin. This is a safe side effect when taking 800 mg or more, as it boosts the production of carnosine [4].

This enhanced carnosine concentration improves the muscle’s ability to eliminate acidic waste products produced as a byproduct of energy regeneration. This leads to an improvement in short-term high-intensity endurance.

For example, a meta-analysis found that 179 g of beta-alanine improved endurance performance by 2.85% [5]. Not all at once!

This takes three to ten weeks. Endurance gains are most successful in the 1-4-minute range, which can result in very high rep sets in the gym or long sprints on the track [6].

The suggested dose ranges from 2.4 to 6.4 g, with the 2.5 g dose in this pre-workout being at the lower end of the spectrum.

However, it is not about a single dose size. It’s the accumulation over time. So, if you train four times a week and take a pre-workout before each session, it’s a good idea to find a pure beta-alanine pill to use on off days to increase your chronic dose.

Betaine Anhydrous (1.8 g)

Betaine anhydrous is a more recent supplement ingredient included in pre-workout formulations showing promise. It may improve the anabolic environment after exercise by lowering the involvement of the AMPK pathway [7].

In layman’s terms, the AMPK molecular pathway activates endurance adaption processes and inhibits the muscle-building pathway known as mTOR.

Therefore, downregulating the AMPK pathway may increase the duration spent in an anabolic environment.

The suggested dose ranges from 1 to 6 g, with Crazy Nutrition Intensive Pre-Train being within this range at 1.8 g.

Taurine and Caffeine

Caffeine and taurine are common energy drink ingredients that function well in pre-workouts. The most interesting aspect is how they work together.

A taurine intake of 71-3105 mg decreases the need for large caffeine levels to get a performance-enhancing effect [8].

The higher the taurine intake, the better the performance, regardless of caffeine dosage. Typically, a dose of 3 – 6 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight effectively increases strength by 6.5% and increases the number of reps performed when lifting by 9.4% [9].

If you weigh over 65 kg, you may notice Crazy Nutrition is beneath the 3 mg barrier. However, with taurine added, only 40 – 325 mg of caffeine is required [8].

Ashwagandha (300 mg)

While Ashwagandha is commonly used to relieve stress and anxiety, two meta-analyses found that a 300 – 1250 mg dose may enhance strength, power, and VO2max [10][11].

Taste

Unexpectedly, the fruit punch flavor is delicious, and I’m enjoying it. I say unexpectedly because I despise the taste of cough medication in certain fruit punch flavors.

On the contrary, it has the flavor of a tropical punch. Energy drinks and overly sugary pre-workouts are also not my cup of tea, but this one tastes great.

There are also two other flavor options, Green Apple and Blue Raspberry, which I haven’t tried, but the very few negative reviews the product has are about the raspberry taste.

Mixability

Blenders and milk frothers make quick work of any substance. I figured I’d see how it would function as a pre-workout blend for those times when you’re on the run.

That is, shaken, rather than stirred, in your shaker bottle (i.e., without the blender ball).

About 250 milliliters of water and half a scoop of Intensive Pre-Train were the ingredients I used. Since I wasn’t planning on training after consuming this, I reduced the amount from the recommended 450–500 ml per scoop—no lumps or powdery aftertaste—just a smooth, precisely blended drink.
