The Iron Sheik by Scott Epstein

The Iron Sheik is the ninth in our 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu techniques series with Scott “Einstein” Epstein.

Join “Einstein” of 10PWLA to learn the Iron Sheik, as part of our Videos from the Vault series. This 13 part collection focuses on 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu techniques with Scott Epstein.

Scott is the only third degree Blackbelt in the 10th planet Jiu Jitsu system under Eddie Bravo. The ever-developing system was created by Eddie Bravo as a no gi method for MMA and submission grappling. Scott is the founder and head coach of 10th Planet West LA, one of the top 10th Planet locations in the world. He has been grappling for around 20 years and had a brief professional MMA career in which he won all his fights by submission. Scott has had a sublime high-level professional grappling career, with multiple wins at top tournaments. He was Chuck Liddell’s Jiu Jitsu and strength coach, as well as the Jiu Jitsu coach for team Liddell on Ultimate Fighter season 11.

Here, Scott demonstrates the Iron Sheik.

This is a simple move from the back. When you have your opponent’s back from the top, they may have a great defense in that position, making the choke almost impossible, unless you have the rear naked choke in tight. Instead of trying to get the choke in, you can remove both arms, digging your elbows into their shoulder blades. Then you grab their forehead with both hands and pull back, for a powerful neck crank. An alternative is to grab lower on their chin, making the neck crank even stronger.
