The Jiu-Jitsu world was dealing with the aftermath of CJI vs ADCC 2024 in September, so naturally quite a lot of elite no gi grapplers were taking some time off. That didn’t stop some competitors though, and there was still plenty of action on the mats for those who wanted to watch it. Ocean BJJ Pro Championship hosted their first grand finale, crowning four champions. The inaugural BJJ Clubes event also took place, setting the stage for the first major team grappling gi tournament. The biggest promotion in Europe also hosted their most recent event, and Polaris 29 still featured some of the best in the world. Naturally both events combined had a huge effect on the Jits Magazine BJJ Rankings, which REVGEAR is the proud sponsor of.

Storylines from the mats in September 2024

Ocean BJJ Pro Championship crowns first champions and BJJ Clubes 2024 kicks off

Ocean BJJ Pro Championship has been building up to their grand finale all throughout 2024 and when things finally came to a head, the promotion didn’t disappoint. After several Trials events and inviting a handful of elite competitors, they had put together four excellent tournaments. Tarik Hopstock won the men’s under 80kg division and Luccas Lira won the men’s over 80kg division, but Pawel Jaworski also stood out for making runs in both brackets and finishing the night with some wins over big names. The main storyline in the women’s divisions came from Gamila Kanew, as she also competed in both brackets and managed to take home both titles. Kanew went 4-0 with 2 submission wins, becoming the promotion’s inaugural lightweight and heavyweight champion on the same night.

BJJ Clubes made their debut on the same night that Ocean BJJ Pro Championship was coming to an end, and Brazilian promotion was bringing something completely new into the world. They had set up a team grappling gi tournament, with 8 teams representing different areas of Brazil and competing across several events. This first event featured half of the quarter-final round, with Fortaleza taking on Camboriu and Ferrovaria facing Botafago. With the winning team being decided over the course of 7 matches, Camboriu won the first match by a thin margin at 4-3 and Botafago was able to be a little more dominant with a score of 5-2 in their match. They will now face one another in the semi-final round later in the year, while the next event will feature the other two quarter-final matches.

And off the mats…

Mikey Musumeci didn’t make it to the mats for his most recent title-defense at ONE Championship, as he missed weight and was stripped of the flyweight title. That wasn’t the only big development in the promotion’s submission grappling division because they also welcomed a new Vice President of grappling, Tom DeBlass. He wasn’t the only veteran grappler who made headlines in September too, as rumors about the return of the Mendes Brothers started to gain traction when their student Tainan Dalpra said that it should be soon. In other news, the Jiu-Jitsu world was shocked when one of the biggest stars in the gi world right now failed a USADA test. Fellipe Andrew was stripped of his IBJJF Pans title for the failed test and is now suspended from IBJJF competition for two years.
