Pete Shoemaker’s Shoehorn

Head coach of Precision Jiu Jitsu Spring Mount, PA and Fight 2 Win athlete Pete Shoemaker shows us his shoehorn submission

The shoehorn is a powerful submission that is somewhat like an americana, but comes from an unexpected position. While the submission can come from a few different places, Pete starts his from butterfly guard in this case.

From butterfly, Pete uses his right leg to kick out his opponent’s knee, making the angle for the arm drag. Pete drags the opposite arm down to the ground, controlling it with his right arm, keeping his elbow next to his hip. From here, he swings his left leg over his opponent’s head, digging his heel into the collar bone. This appears to be a loose position at first, but you will spin easily as your opponent does, stopping him from escaping.

To finish the shoehorn, Pete digs his right arm under his opponent’s arm, hooking his hand over the top of his own thigh. He then pushes his hips forward to complete the shoehorn.

Next time you find yourself in a position where you can try for the triangle, give the shoehorn a try and see if you can get this fast and effective submission to work in your favor.
