Stipe Miocic – Greatest Heavyweight in UFC History

With a record that speaks for itself, Stipe Miocic has the strongest claim to greatest heavyweight of all time in the UFC

The numbers don’t lie. Put the fight record of Stipe Miocic up against any other UFC heavyweight and compare them. Stipe is the GOAT of the UFC Heavyweight division.

Born and raised in Ohio, the son of Croatian parents, Miocic was a natural born athlete. At high school he wrestled as well as playing both baseball and football. He dropped football, but continued to wrestle in Division 1 and play baseball in Division 2 at Cleveland State University. Despite interest from the MLB, it was wrestling that would lead to his MMA career.

In 2005, Stipe Miocic was brought in to wrestle with UFC and PRIDE super-heavyweight Dan Bobish at Strong Style MMA Training Center in Independence, Ohio. He stopped this to finish his paramedic training at Cuyahoga Community College, then returned to Strong Style, briefly switching to boxing, and winning the Cleveland Golden Gloves and reaching the national quarter-finals. Being a Golden Gloves champion and D1 Wrestler is something Miocic shares with another great of MMA, Henry Cerudo.

After just eight months of training, Miocic took on his first MMA fight. His first six fights ended in him knocking out his opponents. In 2011 he signed with the UFC, winning his debut bout against Joey Beltran. In 2016, after an impressive run, Miocic got his title shot against Fabrício Werdum, who he finished in the first round. He then defended his title three times, the record for the heavyweight division, defeating Alistair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos and Francis Ngannou.

Miocic then faced Daniel Cormier in 2018, losing the strap to him, but then winning it back a year later when they met for the second time. The pair met again in August 2020 at UFC 252 for the conclusion of their trilogy, with Miocic once again retaining the strap and the UFC title.

Stipe Miocic has a record that speaks for itself: Two-time UFC heavyweight title holder, most heavyweight championship defences (consecutive or otherwise), three-times Fight of the Night, five-times Performance of the Night, most strikes landed in a fight (361 against Mark Hunt.) With a professional record of 20 wins and 3 losses, it is hard to argue against Miocic being the greatest heavyweight in UFC history.
