MMA Pad Work Master, Eddie Cha demonstrates a counter striking drill in the second of his exclusive tutorial series for Revgear Sports.

The drill uses Revgear counter punch mitts, a product specifically designed for counter striking and slipping drills and has been a firm favourite of Boxing coaches around the world for many years. Check our Revgear Counter Punch Mitts here.

Coach Eddie emphasizes countering the opponents right hand using evasive movement either straight back, on a 45 degree angle or rolling under the shot to counter.

The drill consists of:

  • Pad Holder throws Right: Striker Steps back by pushing off lead leg countering with left hook followed by right cross.
  • Pad holder then throws jab from left. Striker steps off slipping to his right countering with his right uppercut followed by a body roll, simultaneous left to the body and finishing with a right hook to the pad/head (4 – 3 – 2 Combination)

Coach Eddie calls this Pull, Slip to roll under. Different coaches may use different terminology on these individual movements but watch the video closely when learning this drill and match your movements to those described by MMA Pad work master coach Eddie Cha.

This is an intermediate to advanced drill so concentrate on making sure you have the basic movements, strikes and foot work patterns correct. Eddie advises building the drill up in segments before putting it all together and once the patterns are established the more advanced practitioner may add in further strikes and react to the pad holders counters and movement.
